Son In The Gospel
Timothy, my own son in the faith.
I Timothy 1:2
Blessed is the preacher who has a preacher son. But if one has not son in the flesh he may, like Paul, have a son in the faith.
To win a boy to Jesus, like Andrew, to find “a lad here,” with his loaves and fishes, and bring him to the Saviour-that is to have a son in the Gospel. Or to show some youth the Heavenly Vision and awaken him to the challenge of the Cross-that is to be a father in the faith.
We are married to Christ, that we should bring forth fruit unto God (Rom. 7:4). Paul speaks of Onesimus as “Begotten in my bonds” and of the Corinthians as “begotten through the gospel.” He writes to the Galatians, “My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you” (Gal. 4:19).
And think of the spiritual grandchildren! The man who led Moody to Christ started a family without number.
How many “children” can you report to the Heavenly Census Taker?
